Kia Motors unveiled only the SP SUV concept in the ongoing Auto Expo. Though Kia Motors had announced that it would be entering the Indian market with a compact sedan and a compact SUV. However, the South Korean manufacturer did not showcase the new version of the Rio sedan at the show, which is currently on sale in global markets.
According to an insider at the Auto Expo 2018, our correspondents learned that Kia Motors is planning to bring another SUV to India in the second half of 2020, which will be the brand’s second offering to the Indian customers. While the carmaker did not want to disclose much about the positioning of the vehicle in its line-up or the powertrain options since the product is in very early stages of development, we were assured that it is not one of the products in Kia’s current global line-up. In fact, according to the sources, the second SUV will also be designed and launched specifically, keeping in mind the Indian customers and market needs.
The fact that Kia is developing a new platform altogether for this product, there is no denying of the fact that the company is planning to enter the sub-compact SUV segment, and is going to give a tough competition to the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, and the Ford EcoSport. The new platform will allow Kia Motors to bring entry-level and premium hatchbacks alongside a sub-4m sedan. Thus, it remains to be seen what the South Korean car-maker will do in the coming future. However, going by its current strategy of developing vehicles keeping in mind the Indian context, it seems that the car-maker is all set to give a tough competition to the incumbents.
