Mahindra, India’s one of the most demanded automobile manufacturing company has pledged to surprise its audience to a new extent. Not a day goes by without photos surfacing online of fresh sightings of one of Mahindra’s upcoming vehicles under test. Over 2018, Mahindra will launch multiple products in its bid to win back market share. In addition to the routine facelifts and updates, such as that for the XUV500, the manufacturer will also bring out the stretched version of the TUV300, a new MPV and a new SUV. It is the new SUV (known internally by its codename S201) that we are focusing on.
Now let’s discuss this amazing SUV
Going by the spy shots available on the web, the S201 compact SUV looks like an early prototype model. However, the media reports suggest that the compact SUV will have different styling. Reports suggest that the Mahindra version will also get more ground clearance and use chunkier tyres. Talking about design highlights, the SUV could get a sculpted bonnet, sweptback headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, fog lamps with chrome surround, new bumper and wide air intakes. The rear could get integrated roof spoiler, LED tail lamps and aggressive bumper. The smaller SUV (S201) is essentially a modified version of the SsangYong Tivoli which has been shortened to a length of less than four metres to benefit from the tax concessions given to cars under four metres in length.
Not only the looks but the car is no less in features also. For entertainment and connectivity, the SUV could get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and navigation. It will also work as a display for the reverse parking camera. Other features include multi-functional steering wheel, climate control, leather upholstery, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry, reversing camera, etc. While this variant is expected to take on Tata’s Nexon and Maruti’s Brezza, the longer variant will square up against the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster.
POWER AND ENGINE
This was about the style but for an SUV engine and power are equally important. Not to worry cause the Mahindra SUV will be offered with multiple engine options but the most interesting will be Mahindra’s new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. It is essentially the same G80 1.2-litre, the three-cylinder unit found under the hood of the Mahindra KUV100 NXT, but with major upgrades in the form of direct injection and turbocharging. Although proper details are not confirmed as yet but power is expected in the region of 140hp. Not only this, the car will also have versions with a 1.5-litre diesel engine.
NOMENCLATURE AND LAUNCH DATE
As Mahindra’s XUV500 has already set up a strong platform for XUV name, therefore the company plans to name its upcoming smaller monocoque-bodied SUV, the XUV300. As per the reports by the company, the ‘300’ in the name would also help establish the new model’s position in Mahindra’s SUV size hierarchy.
Though Mahindra is yet to make an official announcement on the launch of this compact SUV, but media reports suggest that the S201 could be launched by late 2018. An early prototype of the SUV could make its debut at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo.
