We are almost halfway through 2018 witnessing both the high-end and mass car manufacturers coming up with new versions of their present models and some new products as well in India. Toyota updated it’s Land Cruiser Prado with a facelift, while ford brought back it’s Ecoboost engine back to India with a new high-end trim of its popular compact SUV the Ecosport and also launched a fresh new product the freestyle cross hatchback. The third generation swift and the facelifted version of Hyundai’s hot hatch the elite i-20 was spotted in the 2018 Auto Expo earlier this year. The expo also witnessed some new horses from the stable of premium car manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes, the former with its 6-series GT, X6 35i, along with M3, M4 and M5 while the latter launched the Maybach badged S 560 and S 650. As the year advances, we’ll be seeing even more horses coming out of the various stables.
Jeep Compass Trailhawk
Jeep has already begun pre-booking for this high-end trim of it’s Compass SUV. The Trailhawk is already being manufactured in Jeep’s Indian plant but was only exported till now, but Jeep has decided to introduce this in the domestic market as well. It will be rival of against Mahindra XUV500. The trailhawk is also rumoured to get a more powerful engine unit with its 4WD technology from Jeep’s selection. Also, Jeep will be introducing a Diesel-automatic variant. This 9-speed automatic transmission will be mated to 170hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine, currently, a 6-speed manual transmission is offered on top spec trim, Limited(O) 4×4.
Volvo XC40 (July 2018)
Volvo in its line of SUV is going to introduce an all-new product for the Indian market, it’s baby SUV the XC40 which will be rival of Mercedes GLA, BMW X1, and the Audi Q3. The XC40 will be offered with a 247hp, 2.0 litre, four-cylinder petrol (T5) engine and a 190hp, 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel (D4) engine. Both are expected to be mated with the 8-speed automatic gearboxes, with all-wheel drive system standard on all trims. It will be priced competitively despite being brought in as a CBU. It is expected to be priced in the range of Rs. 27-30 lakhs (ex-showroom).
New Maruti Ertiga (August 2018)
This refreshed hot MPV will now be wider and longer than the outgoing model, meaning there would be more space on the inside creating more leg room for the third-row passengers. The new Ertiga is said to be offered with the new 104hp, 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel engine, at the time of launch. A new 1.5-litre diesel engine is also under development which might replace the 1.3 at a later stage. Also, the wheels are now expected to go upto a size of 16-inches.
Bentley Continental GT
The third generation of this sporty grand tourer from Bentley will be housing the Porsche developed MSD platform that’s currently being used in the new Panamera. It also uses the roll active control system from Bentayga. It has also shed some 85kgs, making it more agile than the outgoing model. The mill that will be powering up this beast will be a 6.0 litre, twin-turbocharged W12 petrol engine, that could make it go from 0 to 100 kph in 3.7 sec, with a top speed of 333kph.
New Honda CR-V
The new CR-V was spotted earlier this year at the Auto Expo. The 3rd gen model will also be offered with a 160hp, 1.6-litre diesel engine, unlike the outgoing one. A new 9-speed automatic transmission system is also rumoured, it will be rival of Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Compass.
The X2 will be the sixth SUV from BMW’s stable, sharing the same UKL platform as it’s X1. It will be sportier than the X1 which will rival against the likes of Range Rover Evoque. For the domestic market, it is rumoured to be offered with X1’s 190hp, 2.0-litre petrol with front-wheel drive, the 190hp, 2.0-litre diesel with all-wheel drive, and the range-topping 231hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine with all-wheel drive.
Ford Figo & Aspire Facelift
The Figo hatchback and the Aspire sedan will be getting refreshed with some cosmetic changes and also will now be sharing the new 96,1.2 litre dragon petrol Motor from the freestyle. This 3-cylinder dragon engine will be replacing the previously offered 1.2-litre petrol sigma engine. Not just the engine but also it will be getting a 6.5-inch screen infotainment system from freestyle with Ford sync 3 and 6 airbags for the top spec trim.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift (June-July 2018)
The mid-sized sedan from the Japanese manufacturer will be getting refreshed exteriors as well as interiors. Moreover, it will now be sporting a newly developed K15B 1.5 litre petrol motor rather than the outgoing 1.4-litre petrol motor and will be churning up 12hp and 8.4Nm, at 104hp and 138.4 Nm of peak torque. Which would help it compete at a better front against its more powerful rivals, Toyota Yaris, Honda City and Hyundai Verna.
The kicks will be based on the platform which is also sported by the Terrano, duster and the Captur. Though it would be more appealing to look but will house the same 104hp, 1.5-litre petrol and 110hp. 1.5-litre diesel power units as the Terrano and the duster. Top spec trim is also rumoured to get a 360-degree camera, side-curtain airbags and traction control.
Tata Tiago, Tigor EVs
The all-electric versions of the Tiago and the Tigor were spotted earlier this year at the auto expo. There isn’t much to differentiate on the exteriors from their internal combustion engine counterparts, besides the badging. They will be using a 3-phase AC induction motor rated at a peak output of 30 KW at 4500 rpm(approx. 40hp), while no mentioning of charge timings and range were there. It is expected to be tagged at a price of Rs.10 lakh.
